Clomid stimulates ovulation. It contains the active ingredient clomifene which stimulates the release of two hormones: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH). These hormones increase the chances of egg development and ovulation. Clomid is a prescription-only medicine.

What is Clomid used for?

Clomid is used to treat infertility in women who are having problems with ovulation. Clomid stimulates regular ovulation and thus increases the chances of pregnancy.

How to use Clomid

Clomid tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. They can be taken with or without food. Clomid is only taken on certain days of the months. You should start taking the tablets on day five of your menstrual cycle. If you don’t have any periods, ask your doctor when to take the tablets. Clomid should not be used for more than six cycles of therapy. Its use should be discontinued if no pregnancy has occurred after six months.

Dosage

Unless otherwise advised by a doctor, the usual dose in adults is:

  • one tablet once daily for five days.

Do not use this medicine for more than six months without consulting a doctor. Always follow the prescription exactly – never use more or less than the doctor recommends. Read the package leaflet before use.

Side effects

Clomid may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine:

  • Hot flashes;
  • Breast tenderness;
  • Heavy or painful menstrual periods;
  • Headache;
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, stomach ache);
  • Visual disturbances (blurred vision or other visual symptoms such as spots or flashes );
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

When not to use Clomid

Clomid is not suitable for everyone and should not be used if:

  • You are allergic to clomifene or any other ingredient in this medicine;
  • You have a liver condition;
  • You suffer from abnormal bleeding from the uterus;
  • You have a cancer which is sensitive to hormones;
  • You have a condition of the pituitary gland.

Use caution if you have a condition affecting the ovaries, raised levels of triglycerides in your blood (hypertriglyceridaemia) or other health problems. In this case, you should consult your doctor before taking this medicine. Clomid is known to interact with some medicines. It is therefore important to tell the doctor what medicines you are already taking to make sure the combination is safe.
