Anadrol 50 (oxymetholone) is primarily used in treating anemias caused by deficiencies in the production of red blood cells. It works by enhancing the production and the urinary excretions of erythropoietin, a chemical in the body that increases red blood cell production, in patients suffering from anemia caused by bone marrow failure, as well as by stimulating the actual process of red blood cell production. Classed as an anabolic steroid, Anadrol 50 (oxymetholone) has the Anadrol 50 Steroids Bottledistinction of being the only oral-administration anabolic steroid approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States for treating anemia due to the deficient production of red blood cells.
Health risks
As with all other medications, Anadrol 50 (oxymetholone) also has its own share of risks. Some of them are:
Peliosis hepatis – Peliosis hepatitis is a condition wherein liver and sometimes spleen tissue is replaced by blood-filled cysts. Reported in patients undergoing therapy with anabolic steroids, these cysts sometimes have minimal effects on hepatic functions although at other times were seen connected to liver failure. On the whole however, the cysts are not recognized as life-threatening until intra-abdominal hemorrhage develops or liver failure ensues. Stopping using the medication normally makes the lesions disappear. Tumors in the liver cells have also been reported. But while mostly benign, some malignant ones have also been found. Again, withdrawing medication results in regression.
Blood lipid changes – Changes in the blood lipids are reported to be associated with higher levels of risk for atherosclerosis, as seen in patients using anabolic steroids and androgens. These changes include lower high-density lipoproteins and sometimes, an increase in low-density lipoproteins.
Edema – Edema happens as a serious complication found in patients who are suffering from pre-existing hepatic, renal, or cardiac diseases.
Caution
Anadrol 50 steroids (oxymetholone) shouldn’t be used for female patients with hypercalcemia and carcinoma of the breast, male patients who have carcinoma of the breast or prostrate, women who are or intending to be pregnant, patients with hypersensitivity to oxymetholone, patients with the nephrotic phase of nephritis, nephrosis, or those with severe hepatic dysfunctions. Diabetic patients taking anabolic steroids may require different dosages for oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin.
