Active substance: Spironolactone 25mg
Indications for use
Aldactone 25mg is used to treat heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), or hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood). Spironolactone also treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome.
Method of administration and dosage
Initial dose usually 100 mg/day to 200 mg/day. In severe cases the dosage may be gradually increased up to 400 mg/day.
Contraindications
- a condition where the adrenal glands produce less hormones called Addison’s disease.
- low amount of sodium in the blood.
- high levels of potassium in the blood.
- acute kidney failure.
- decreased kidney function.
- decreased blood volume.
- cessation of urine production.
- hyperchloremic acidosis.
Precautionary measures
- Tell your doctor if you have Addison’s disease or other conditions that may cause high blood levels of potassium, or kidney disease. Your doctor may tell you not to take spironolactone.
- Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking spironolactone, call your doctor.
- If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking spironolactone.
- You should know that drinking alcohol with this medication may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. Talk to your doctor about drinking alcohol while you are taking spironolactone.
Side effects
- High potassium levels in their blood.
- Addison’s disease.
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug.
